OK, I wrote down this question, like I would for my "Carmen Sandiego" pages on Facebook, and here is what I found, using Google and Wikipedia.
"The Toll House Inn of Whitman, MA, was established in 1930 by Terry and Ruth Graves Wakefield. Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies are named for the inn. Contrary to its name and the sign, which still stands despite the building burning down in 1984, the place was never a "toll house" and was built in 1817, not 1709. "Toll House" and "1709" was a marketing strategy.
As far as the "mysterious" ingredient in the original recipe that did not melt correctly, it was a Nestle's Chocolate Bar."
