It's not very common, but there's arduino/esp32 libraries for each discrete element, so it shouldn't take too much glue to bring it all together.

The other trick here is going to be security. MQTT is unsecure by default, as is node-red.

Are you able to use something like Let's Encrypt over wifi? It's a bit of a stretch, but authentication over https might be easy.

I'm looking into it now. There is a secure variant of mqtt that can use ssl/tls.

How many would need access?

A big part of this will be collecting usage statistics in addition to access control.
