I'm pretty sure that some of the clues are literally lifted from the '80s games. It basically plays like them, but without having to get a warrant, and with some cutscenes (if one can call them that) with Carmen, Chief, and Tigress. All the locations and clues are pre-filled too.
I didn't notice till someone on Tumblr pointed it out, but the game is actually being advertised under the search box on the Google homepage.
It's frustrating because, like literally everything else when it comes to HMH, it could have been something cool but instead they half-assed it and tried to split the difference when it comes to the question of audience, leaving us with something that's at kids' level but seems built for nostalgic adults.
As predicted. I saw the code for something similar to this and attempted to recreate it years ago. I didn’t have the time or resources to continue then. Sad to see after all these years, it’s still the same scripted formula.
What baffles me is why they keep going back to the Gen 1 floppy disk format. Why not something from the deluxe CD Rom games? Why not something from the junior games that had parts of the game show? I even played the Target-exclusive card game and aced it in the first round because it used the similar format.

I thought the same. One assumes they think the 80s format holds more nostalgic appeal and/or more appeal because of the popularity of the 8-bit aesthetic.
"In the original Carmen looks like a man. The original episodes all end the same, the new one has more characters, they all end differently and the art style is better"
