I agree with what @Jacqueline Hyde said above, regarding the church being somewhat of a social aspect. My mother attended church for that reason as well.
@Morgan coming from a town of 700 people, the church was THE social force in my parents' life. especially as my mom worked there so didn't even have a group of outside work friends like my dad did.
