for instance, mandarin and cantonese are mutually unintelligible, yet they're considered dialects of the same language, because they're both spoken within one country. meanwhile, norwegian and danish are mutually intelligible (probably even more so than castilian and latin american spanish), yet are considered different languages since they're spoken in different countries.

in addition, there is always blending of languages around population/political borders, which is where pidgins and creoles come in, but it's not like there's a clear point at which it stops being (for instance) french and becomes a french/catalan creole.

speaking of languages, though, here's a delightful meme my friend sent me just a little bit ago, since they know i'm "both a linguist and an eevee fan"

@Jacqueline Hyde is correct, and the linguistic term 'dialect' is used in reference to non-variety of the language, one that has evolved independently but share common ancestry. While 'variety' is used for languages that is characteristic to a particular group of speakers.
