True story -- I had a business meeting in Dubai, and this guy came in, spoke French with such a thick accent that I thought he was speaking Arabic. My brain didn't quite get how it understood his Arabic until I spoke French back... because it was French.

That happened frequently to me as well while translating.

I no longer translate, of course, that sort of thing is much more tedious than necessary.
