It did strike a chord with me. While growing up, I did have nannies from Botswana and Zimbabwe, and they were there... as family, but never quite. It took me some time to realize what they were to us, and that was through the way my parents and siblings treated them.))

My au pairs were from Germany. Most came to study in the States. I never did quite understand they weren't family until they cycled out for a bit and had to think... 'wait a minute...'

(I hope never to return to the state I grew up in, our house was so barren our only heat was a wood stove, and the walls so worn, moonlight shone through them in the dead of winter(
