Maybe they plotted this as a way to get some more money out of the deal and keep the necklace.

All of my research indicated that it was real. Once I had my hands on it, I knew it wasn't real. The weight of it as well as the smoothness of each stone is far too exact to be a historic piece such as the original should be.
