I was both excited to be in this new town and a bit apprehensive. My mom and I moved around a lot because of her job in the Air Force. I really liked all the new places and cultures I saw, but moving around a lot came with disadvantages, too. It was always difficult for me to make friends, and when I did, it was only a select few. I never really fit in with the other kids because I was shy and I had a few limitations, but I never let that stop me. While the other kids played together, I usually found a quiet spot to hide and read. I poured myself into any book I could get my hands on. I loved History and Geography, but I also wanted to learn everything I could about the world. What made the leaning tower of Pisa lean? What happened to the Venus De Milo's Arms? Who was the first person to use milk on cereal, and why do we wish on turkey bones as we break them? A few of the other kids took notice of my withdrawal, how much the teachers seemed to like me and spend extra time helping me out. There were also whispers from the other kids about me which I found out later.
"Look at her, she's such a snob. She thinks she's better than us because she never talks to anybody. She spends all her time with teachers and animals."
It was really lucky for us though, not too long after that happened, we received orders to move again, and that's how we came to San Francisco. I am so glad to be away from those people, but I’m not sure if I was ready for school to begin in a few weeks.
"Lucy! Breakfast is ready!" Mom called from the bottom of the stairs, bringing me from my thoughts. I carefully got up and climbed back in the window. I knew mom would have a cow if she knew I was sitting on the roof, so I only went up there when she wasn't around or early in the morning. I felt safe up there, more than anywhere else in the house and it was the perfect look-out point. I crossed my room and followed the short and narrow hall to the stairs, not missing a beat I jumped from the top step to the bottom. Mom was on the phone in the kitchen grabbing her hot bagel out of the toaster and a cup of coffee. "Yes sir, I will be there immediately," she said goodbye and hung up. "Lucy, I have been called into work a week early. I don't know when I will be home tonight so I'm leaving you some money on the counter if you get hungry." mom said, walking quickly for the front door. "Don't you and Luna get into any trouble before school starts, OK?". Luna let out a loud meow from the couch as if to reassure mom.
"OK, mom."
Luna, my black and white cat, followed me everywhere and always loved to sleep next to my face at night. She jumped off the couch and ran to my feet rubbing against them while purring.
"Have a good day," Mom said smiling and shutting the door behind her.
I picked up Luna while she continued purring and returned to the kitchen for my bagel and orange juice. I set Luna on the counter away from my food as I enjoyed it. When I finished my bagel and orange juice I returned to my room to get dressed and get on my laptop. In the weeks before we left, when we were packing up slowly, I was searching online all the neat places to visit in San Francisco. Luna had followed me up the stairs and jumped up on my desk, meowing.
“What do you think, Luna? Should I go see the cable cars today?" Luna walked across my desk, lying down in between my keyboard and my screen wanting attention. I laughed and scratched her behind her left ear before turning off my computer. I threw on my shoes, grabbed the extra house keys and my backpack. I put my camera, wallet and my cell phone in my backpack as I made my way to the front door. Mom wouldn't mind if I explored a little, as long as I was back before dark. I locked the front door and left. I had been waiting for this moment for weeks, and it was finally here.
