Maybe it was just my skim of that hippo article, but it seemed a bit slanted towards leaving the hippos in place.

There was backlash when the military killed one hippo in an attempt to control the population.

So to the local Colombians, the animals are welcomed.

But... we all know hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal.

Do we sit around and wait for some unwitting local to get mauled by one... or do we preemptively do something?

If the locals welcome the animals, they ought to at least be educated as to the risks.

For example, in grade school here we were taught basic bear safety.

In Africa, populations are naturally controlled by drought, but in Colombia, they have no natural deterrent and have plenty of food year round.

@Eugene funny, in michigan we were just taught not to touch butterflies. (apparently new york does not teach this, incidentally.)
