I made a bunch of comments over this page on DA and in fact DA right now is seeing a slightly different version of the page. You guys are seeing the version meant to be presented over there in a few days. .. I'll share a little of the comments I made on DA if people want to read them. ?

OK, first of all--I LOVE that title--the title is what really makes you want to read the story.

-And second, I LOVE the use of black-and-white--a nice touch, for something clearly meant to show the "history" of ACME. Plus, black-and-white adds extra drama to everything. ?

I love noir style well anything really the more monochrome the better.
I like the old time look the font gives although now I feel a bit ashamed it's not a full length story. This short is just what gets the detectives teaming up and gives the impression you have a feeling of what's to come.

This is sort of my third comic in the style. You guys saw the second here, the one set in modern times using Ivy & Carmen. The first which I'll post here if it's deemed ok to do so. ( I only question permission since the story belongs in the same AU but has no CS elements in it. ) The first was named Ice and it acted as a quick but clipped introduction to Alpine Adam. ( That guy you've seen in plot line C who works for Waruda & knows Amazon Annie. )

This bugs me a little that I posted it on DA but no one said a word or barely noticed the journal entry. While I can't offer the reward here of DA spending points since with the exception of Chase. I don't think anyone has a DA account and even then I have the impression he doesn't log on to DA much.

Just to see whos really been paying attention to the series I made up a trivia quiz for the AU. First person to answer all questions right is awarded 20 points. If any one took up the challenge here I'd award them a free commission from me of art.

If people want to see this trivia challenge and take it up, I'll post it in this forum. Do note all answers can either be found directly inside various stories & misc. to the series. Or the answers appear in my artist comments to direct posts to the series.

On a side note my ACME shirt came in the other day. ?

... No one is interested huh?
Only one of you gave feedback to my question in PM. ?

Sorry this page took so long to make.

Watching season four in the background. ... Please note I wrote his short before watching the latest season. Honestly one plot aspect was based from an IG story, not a CS one.

(I don't want to interrupt the continuity of your great story--but on Monday I was looking for some interesting items for my ACME-themed Carmen Sandiego fan page on Facebook (called ACME Detective Fans) and the home-page for Bing had an a photo of an interesting location in Morocco; so I looked for other things related to that. I actually found a few maps--and of course, I remembered the movie Casablanca--and found this photo of Ingrid Bergman as Elsa.

I don't know if you'll agree--but this is sort of how I think of Jocelyn--except I known Jocelyn is a bit older--and with a mechanical hand--which is so cool--especially for that era. ? )

The clothes I can picture but not quite to face even if we'd both know she's older.

If you want I can relay a lot of information surrounding Jocelyn Deyriès a.k.a. Gadget-Girl. Some of it has been said before but elsewhere ... and ignored. But other bits to creative process haven't been given light to the internet.

Beyond the steampunk reasoning and period set nature talked on, here are other details.

Her appearance at least in her younger days was based from a headshot piece of concept art left over from the 90's that has managed to survive to today. It showed a lady very much in design idea to Inspector Gadget but with bigger flaring hair ( white ) and a mole. This piece of concept art is also where the idea stems from she owns a black & white cat.

I translated the white hair into it being platinum blonde. Only one other piece of concept art exists from the lost series and that showed her as a red head. But by the time I saw that art, I had already drawn Jocelyn's concept art and felt fine with *most of it.

*Her original prosthetic lower arm was more complex in the first design and had a now completely scrapped idea to it. That she could treat it as a form of musical instrument in activating different gadgets.

When the story of Smoke, Steam and Mirrors was still being outlined, I was feeling more and more revolted by reading of current events in the news. By this point in outlining I had already decided on the time being 1895 which I am aware is a period credited to have had a lot of international migration of people moving to the United States. With the horrid way some migrants are treated entering the United States for real in modern times. I felt it was fitting to show a fictitious one succeeding and beating the odds. Add in at that point in time too, in real life some very awful events were happening to me. Because the other characters noted as leads to the series were both male. It felt good to write for once a strong female character in the spotlight.

Through out the series you rarely see senior characters and at that never ones standing out. I don't count Von Slickstein since he's a side character in my opinion. When having the timeline jump into the 1940's I wanted to show both Jocelyn and Patrick were still active & ready to handle things. Although only showing not much slow down to what they could handle. Unlike other characters, I wanted the two of them seem settled in their ways and grown a lot since their younger days with the past still influencing them.

Jocelyn is the only character I get to have in my opinion fun with her outfits. Sure Victorian dresses are outdated by miles to today's fashion but they sure are interesting in design. So yeah, all her outfits gained concept art with color guidelines. Knowing of course styles had changed by the 40's had me not only adapting her dress sense to the times but turning it conservative also for the fact she's now one of ACME's heads. She has to come across as more business-like than superheroine in a dress meant to be mildly influenced by Batman in appearance. ( The clearest nod to that is her belt seen in Smoke, Steam and Mirrors. )

I'd like to explain on a large reason for being relatively offline for a while. Weeks ago roughly over a month back, my cat got sick and I was tending to him very closely in fear since his movements said he was in trouble, topped with not holding down what little he decided to eat. That is a slim summary of his health for a time but then it started to act better only to then slide into being of extremely grave concern. The VCA determined he had kidney disease and nothing more could be done to help him but ease his pain. They knew I was doing everything I could but the only thing I couldn't do was provide medications which they did. Even the meds. didn't seem to help him much and towards the end it was unbearably sad to witness. He passed on some point in the early morning hours of Monday when the power grid was cut to Texas because of weather.

I did not have power or proper cell phone signal for days and it's only now things are returning to normal. Due to the pipe bursting that feeds my camper, currently there is no water. None can be bought either thanks to quick hoarders at stores. Theta ( my cat ) is going to be buried once the ground is unfrozen.

When power was restored for good is when I wrapped up working on this short last night. I also dove into working on Shattered at about the same time, for the first time in days. Currently I'm 37 pages into writing it.

((OOC: So, I am still here (at least, while ACP is still a thing, then I have to tether my phone to my laptop, send it's internet to Ethernet to my router and setup my other laptop to access that... I managed it once totally by accident)... updating stuff I'm working on is not a fun process (if anyone checks my stories folder on my Google Drive) anymore... the laptop at my desk is old (Core 2 Duo, 2Ghz, 4 gigs RAM, Win7 Ultimate)... Chrome won't update, Drive won't work... I'm stuck using FreeFileSync to keep stuff up to datep things synced. [continuing] I'm sorry if any of my posts are/could be inflammatory or anything... some of them are stuff I've had in the pipeline for a while, and I messed with it enough to get it postable... that's why there are dates showing when I started working on stuff... I'm not, and never have been, trying to step on anyone's toes or say "this is how it should be"... I have no say here, not sure who does these days (like I posted... maybe this is a test to see if we devolve into chaos). Posts like Hierarchy were started long ago, and meant as a guideline and not because I'm the voice of Sauron.

[continuing] I don't have the time to be here a whole lot, I don't have much beyond mom to help with my rent (and once I have a job, that'll take up more time, though I will keep working on stuff (both for here and not) as often as possible, and post when possible on here. I have a question that needs some clarification... being that we are supposed to get permission from the person if we use their character in an addition/story/post, how would that apply if the character is core to the universe (like Carmen... I can replace @Chase, maybe cobble someone into @Ivy's place... but, like @Carmen, being that she's a major character, as long as I don't have her acting or write a major part for her, would that circumvent the rule at all?

[continuing] I'm just curious... the absence of the major's leaves a gap that I'm not sure what to do with anything... we (the Left Behind) could do a story together (or some stories separate), and that'd be cool, but without being able to use any major's, I'm not sure where to take anything. And, yeah... you can probably guess what my typing is like here (or anyplace else)... I type here or in Word, I type something (or notepad), and 15-20+ seconds later it shows up, so I have to stay on top of my grammar and spelling. I have to keep on top of all that, because I'm working on the big Carmen story at the same time, so I can't slip off my game.))

@Jon Eckart Not exactly sure if I understand all your computer probs. I hope you get those resolved soon. Yes, I have many probs with my basic Google Chrome, too. I think it's fair to say we all have a love/hate relationship with technology. 😆 As far as your stories are concerned, you can use any cannon character you like, whether there is a person playing that role on here or not. Say the story is a fanfiction; and that the version of Chase, or Carmen (or whoever) from the computer games, gameshow (or whatever). We don't do Netflix Carmen, mostly because of the violence. And because it is fanfiction, you can also create other characters and situations to suit your story. Now, Chase, Carme, Ivy (or whoever) were here, of course, you would ask their permission; tell them your idea; and if they like it they might write it with you. 🙂

@Jon Eckart Now, if you for a friendship with someone on--and off-site, you might form a partnership with them, and write stories together (like Chase and Carmen; or Chase and Ivy; or Lucy and I) and then you will just put a statement saying that this story is a co-write with whoever. In fact, if you collaborate with this person a lot, people will just assume they have your permission; although you should always say it anyway, just as a common courtesy. In fact, ironically, the only people whose permission you must always ask to use their characters are "original" characters, who are creations of their individual writers (which most of us on here, are) specifically because we are not cannon. I hope that makes sense. 🙂

@Jon Eckart Now, if you want to write something, but don't have a lot of time, I would suggest posting a status; or replying to someone else's status. Or you could start a guessing game. Look under Forums/Guessing Games, and look at some things other people have done, to give you ideas. I hope that helps. 🙂
