The Squirrel.

The wind blew through the crimson leaves, and the shiver of autumn’s arrival hung in the air. The city’s streetlights were lighting up one by one as people returned home on busy streets.
The neighborhood park was filled with life as I noticed a chubby grey squirrel and how he was staring at me with disdain.

So I asked the critter, “What’s the matter?” I knew the animal couldn’t understand me, and yet I asked the rodent another question. “Are you doing okay?” I asked him.

The squirrel flicked his fluffy tail over and over, then he scurried up the towering trunk of a pine tree. I continued to watch as the squirrel climbed up the branches, and his disdain was still etched on his face.

The world isn’t always a wonderful place, and the squirrel was likely to have been experiencing a horrible day. I walked away from the tree as I continued down the light grey sidewalk. The cold air nipped at my ankles as I continued on my way home. “Good-bye!” I called back to the grey squirrel.

"You are likely thinking of the British cannonball embedded in the wall of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Virginia. It was fired by British ships during the shelling of the city on January 1, 1776—months before the United States declared independence."

It was never fully confirmed (but is pretty darn likely) that Malcolm Avalon is Carmen's father.
