It was two or three A.M., and raining very violently, as it was want to do in England during nearly all of the year. The rain was pouring so much the five to six inch long strands of his uncut curly red hair drooped over his face in all directions. He slogged through the mud of the barely beaten dirt road that led him there, riding a tiny two-wheeled vehicle with a rear plate that still said "Property of Sainsbury's" on it. He knew he had to rendezvous according to these protocols. The protocols might have chamged since then, but he wouldn't have any way of knowing.

He usually prided himself on infiltration. More than half the time he didn't have to actually be present in order to do so. But there was no way that Carmen, or anyone who worked for her, would risk that much exposure over the web. So he was forced to do this in person, a tactic he'd grown to hate after what had happened to him just a few years ago.

He approached the rusted metal door just as the wheels on the motot cart chose to gum themselves up but permanently. He stepped off, and took a moment to savage loose the large black chassis which contained everything, including the engine and battery. Without his hands free, he used the very same chassis to rap on the front door three times.

WHAM WHAM WHAM

 

[Charlet]

Charlet perked up from her resting perch on a bookshelf full of magazines.

She jumped down gracefully landing on her feet and answers the door

Looking up at the person.

“Hello? She asks

Ken looked down at the small child at the door and made the most appropriate deduction. 'Another literal orphan, that figures. Then again, if I wasn't such a figurative orphan, maybe I wouldn't be here.' He wasted no time in moving right past the kid and into the hallway, where he sat on a nearby wooden bench. "Sorry, kid, I can't stand too long." He worked feverishly to move the jumble of red hair away from his face, slinging it over his shoulder in a mass of Newton-esque curls, then he fished a handkerchief from his pocket and swirled it over his face to dry it, knocking out a couple of wrapped taffys from his pocket.

Charlet picked up the fallen candy and hands them back to him.

“My name is Charlet shivers.” She introduced herself and curtsied like a little princess.

She turned around to grab her stuffed bunny.

“This is Carmen sanbunny.” She stated

"Keep it," He heaved a heavy breath covering his mouth with the damp handkerchief. He spread his knees, leaning down and forward, though a mound of flab prevented his head from getting too low, as did the mounds directly beneath his neck. He rasped, "Listen kid, I'm looking for a room. It's a big room with silver lights full of grey boxes and wide square TVs, can you show me that?"

 

[Charlet]

She nodded

“I think I might know where it is. But if I don’t find it it’s proably because I spend most of my time in the vents.” She explained.

His lip curled. This one was really a piece of work. Even if he knew what Carmen's designs on her were, he'd be happy to be left out of it. "Okay, well, just go the way you know, and I'll follow. Keep the door open if you can, and if you can't, knock." He rose to his feet again and started down the long corridor. He moved very slowly, perhaps even more than usual as he was still lugging the wheel-less motor cart underneath his right arm.

She skipped down the hallway playfully and didn’t really seem to care she wasn’t suppose to be awake.

She pushed a door open and smiled brightly.
“I think it’s this room.” She admitted

Ken looked down on the girl, thinking he should nod or thank her, but, unable to find anything he just took a couple more steps in, dropping the chassis on the ground with a final WHAM! enough to crack it open and expose the motor and battery. Despite the mass of old outdated PC equipment, he went immediately to checking the sides and back walls. "Ah, Eureka!" He exclaimed, and pulled loose from one corner a hexagonal metal frame with a centipede's worth of tiny silicon wheels bordering every rail. "I knew I'd need this someday, but I didn't think how soon," he murmured to himself. He visibly winched as he got down on both knees and rapidly worked on twisting the wires of the chassis to the monstrous frame.

She stood by the open doorway holding Carmen sanbunny in her arms.

Nearly thirty minutes passed by as the stranger did...something to connect the two pieces of machinery. Finally, he inserted an exposed motherboard into a white slot just right of the seat, and flipped the whole thing horizontally. He sat on the seat, flicked a joystick control, and the multiple silicon wheels at the base of the hexagon began rapidly tapping at the ground, again just like centipede legs, slowly propelling the whole machine, and the man sitting on it, forward.

"I still need to make the seat back, but this will more than-" He came to a halt inches from the girl that was still standing in the doorway. "Oh, you're still here."

“What are you doing? I’m a curious cat.” She stated with a laugh of pure mischief
