Sometimes we prolong the inevitable, for our own selfish reasons. My brother put his dog down a month ago, and when I knew it was coming I asked him to wait long enough for me to make the trip to them and say good-bye. I was glad for that chance, but when I saw him (the dog) I could see how much pain he was in and that it probably would have been kinder to make the decision sooner. There is no winning in a situation like that, and there is no good to come in dwelling upon what might have been done. Yes, there may have been suffering at the end, but they were also surrounded by those who loved them in life and would not turn away when the path became difficult. Many human beings have gone to their graves unattended by as much real regret as we have bestowed upon our beloved companions.))
