You’re allowed to take some sampling from non-descript corners of the work. If it’s a statue, that’s much harder

Indeed. Paintings are, by far, the easiest to authenticate.

There are still some works out there that are assumed real too.

Taken from a famous collection, therefore must be authentic. Occam’s razor

Catherine the Great had a cache of jewelry from the Hellenistic period that were ‘autenticated’ and sold (in the 80s) without serious vetting because of time constraints.
