Forgery is almost an art unto its own. Just before my mentor retired, she and I were part of a team that authenticated several pieces that were alleged to be painted by Vermeer but were really the product of Han van Meegeren. A niche market has since emerged that values the work of the forgery almost as much as the original.

What mostly separated Vermeer from Meergeren?

The time period, for one. Meergeren came almost 200 years later and used modern materials.
