It was 04:00 in the morning when Jason West's alarm went off. Normally Jason West wouldn't be getting up so early in the morning for nearly anything but today was going to be a fun day and Jason was looking forward to getting it started and he had a lot to prep before heading out for the day. Jason had entered into a 3 gun competition and was excited to go have a little bit of competitive fun.
After taking a shower and putting on a comfortable pair of ripstop BDU pants and a t-shirt, Jason walked over to his gun safe to begin loading up everything he would need. He planned to take his highly customized GAP-10 made by Georgia Precision Arms Co., his Benelli M4 with a quick acquisition holographic sight, and a Springfield Armory
(M) 5.25 inch Competition chambered in the common 9x19mm round. As he was packing all the weapons and ammunition that he was going to need, he heard the coffee maker click on signaling that it was 5AM. That also meant that it was time to go next door and wake Derrin up. She wasn't going to be shooting but Jason hoped that his performance today would impress her a bit. Jason stepped out of his apartment and knocked on the door to Derrin's apartment hoping that it would wake her. Jason stepped back in to finish his packing and to get the coffee ready for Derrin and himself.
After getting everything ready to go, he stepped back outside and knocked on Derrin's door one last time before heading down to pack everything into the car. Jason quickly made his way down to the Mustang and put everything in the trunk and then ran back upstairs to get the coffee and lock up before going in to Derrin's apartment to wake her up using the key she had given him in case she didn't wake up when he knocked.
Once the coffee was made into travel cups for both Derrin and himself, Jason unlocked the door and went in to Derrin's apartment. As he walked into her bedroom he couldn't help but think how beautiful she looked sleeping in pajama pants and an oversized t-shirt. He didn't want to wake her but he also knew that she had been looking forward to going ever since he asked her to go with him. Jason waved the coffee under her nose hoping the aroma would help wake her up.
As Derrin smelled the aroma of coffee, she slowly opened her eyes to see Jason standing there with coffee waiting for her to wake up.
"Good morning sunshine." Jason said as he saw Derrin's eyes slowly opening.
"What time is it?" Derrin asked as she slowly sat up.
"Its 5:15. Would you like some coffee?" He asked as he held out a cup for her.
"Have you ever known me to turn down coffee?"
"No but I wasn't sure if you wanted it right after you sat up."
"Well, I'd love it right now." Derrin replied as she took the cup from Jason.
"I got everything loaded up in the car. The only thing missing right now is you and I. I'll wait in the living room if you'd like while you get ready."
"You're fine. Sit on the bed for a few minutes. I'm going to jump in the shower quickly and get dressed so that we can get on the road." Derrin said as she pulled clothes out of her dresser and closet.
Jason sat down on the bed while Derrin stepped into the bathroom and took her shower. Jason slowly sipped his coffee as he heard the water in the shower turn off. He had a lot on his mind but knew that having Derrin at the competition with him would put his mind at ease. He worked well under pressure and really wanted to impress her.
Derrin could see Jason sitting on her bed from her position in the bathroom while she was getting dressed but knew that he couldn't see her from where he was sitting. "He's so handsome and fun to be around. I really enjoy spending time with him. Maybe one of these days he'll actually work up the nerve to ask me to be his girlfriend." Derrin thought to herself while dressing herself. She had picked out this outfit just for him. She knew he liked seeing her in a tight fitting t-shirt and shorts. As she stepped out of the bathroom she bent over to pick up her running shoes so she could sit on the bed next to Jason while she finished getting dressed.
Out of the corner of his eye, Jason saw Derrin coming out of the bathroom. "I swear she just knows what to wear to really draw my attention to her. Maybe tonight will be the night I officially ask her out. She is absolutely perfect in every way." Jason thought to himself while watching her pick up her running shoes.
"Where would you like to get breakfast from this morning?" Jason asked as Derrin sat down on the bed next to him.
"Anywhere you feel like going. Is there a place you had in mind?" Derrin replied.
"Not really. We'll just grab something and eat it on the way then." Jason said while watching Derrin tie her shoes.
"Ready?" Derrin asked as she picked up her backpack.
"No makeup today?" Jason asked as he stood up. He thought Derrin looked great without makeup and that it was unnecessary for her but also knew that it made her feel better to wear it.
"Its already in my bag. I'll put it on in the car as long as you don't drive like a maniac on our way there."
"Now I will just because you said that and the fact that I don't think you need it at all. You look amazing just the way you are." Jason replied.
The pair made their way out of the apartment and both locked their doors before heading down to the car. Jason tried to get to the passenger door before Derrin so that he could be a proper gentleman and open her door for her.
"Trying to earn brownie points today are we? First coffee and now this? You must really want something." Derrin said as Jason open her door for her.
"Maybe." Jason replied as he closed her door and made his way around the car to get in.
Jason started the Mustang and shifted into first gear. As he crept out of the driveway, Jason turned the headlights on. They had about an hour ride ahead of them to get to the competition and Jason was glad that Derrin had agreed to accompany him to it. On the way, Jason stopped and picked up breakfast for them and made small talk while driving.
Once they arrived, Jason pulled his weapons out of the trunk and walked with Derrin to have his weapons checked in before the morning meeting. Jason was excited to be shooting in this particular competition as it was an invite only event and that meant that there would be plenty of good competition for him there.
After the meeting and getting Derrin settled into a decent spectating position, Jason began to load up his magazines and get his weapons prepped for the match. The course had been set up so that the pistol shoot was first, then it was on to the long range shoot and then finally the shotgun shoot.
Jason had drawn Group 1 in the meeting which meant he was in the first group of shooters to head up to the pistol kill-house. Jason readied himself while waiting at the starting line. He knew this was going to be a challenge but had prepared for this day for quite a while. When the buzzer went off, Jason ran into the kill-house and began to work his way through it. The kill-house was scored on both speed and accuracy.
Once Jason was done, he headed over to receive his score. Jason had surprised himself with the score he had obtained. He had earned 145 points out of a possible 15o with a time of 39.76 seconds. That was enough to put him in second place early on which was both a good and bad feeling. There were a few really good shooters coming up behind him. Jason hoped that if someone had beaten him for second, that he would be able to recover the position in one of the other parts.
After he received his score, Jason walked over to his staging area and unlocked the case that contained the GAP-10. After removing the rifle from its case, Jason quickly placed his pistol in the case and locked it back up. He hefted the rifle onto his shoulder and made his way out to the long range target area. The distances of the targets were unknown but Jason knew the maximum distance would only be 800 yards. As he made his way to the targets, he looked at the weapons his competitors had laid out and were prepping for their turns. Jason spotted many AR-15s and one lone AK-47. Jason knew at that point that if there was a target beyond 600 yards, he was going to own this portion of the match.
As Jason reached the targets, he began to think of the best approach for this series of targets. He quickly looked at the dope sheet strapped to his arm and set his dope for 500 yards. Jason knew that if there were targets beyond that, he would be able to either adjust quick enough or mil-dot his way to the target.
He set the rifle on the shooting line and began to settle in behind the rifle. Accuracy was the most important part of this section but time was also a factor. Once the signal was given, Jason began to search for his first target which happened to pop up at about 750 yards out. Jason exhaled and fired. He continued this pattern of exhaling and squeezing the trigger for each target. After the 15th target, Jason stood up and picked his weapon up. He headed to the scoring station and was informed that he had hit every bullseye on each target. Thoroughly impressed with himself, Jason felt confident that he would at least place in the money for the competition. The prize pool for this match was ten thousand dollars for first place, seven thousand five hundred dollars for second place, five thousand dollars for third place and two thousand five hundred dollars for fourth place.
Jason made his way back to the staging area and put the rifle back in its case. He quickly placed the Springfield and its holster on his belt and then made his way to see Derrin. Jason's group had a one hour lunch break before moving on to the shotgun shoot. As Jason approached Derrin, he smiled and admired how great she looked in the sun.
"Ready for lunch?" Jason asked as he got closer to Derrin.
"Yeah, I could go for something. How are you doing so far?" Derrin said as she stood up to join him.
"I'm second overall right now. As long as I don't beat myself in the shotgun, I think I'll be doing good." Jason replied.
The pair made their way to a concession truck that had been brought in for the match. They both decided to have a cheeseburger and french fries with bottled water and once their order was ready, they made their way to a picnic table so they could sit down and enjoy their lunch together.
"Are you having fun so far?" Jason asked as they finished eating.
"I always have fun when I'm with you."
"I'm glad. I have a blast when I'm with you." Jason said.
After a little more small talk, they made their way back to Jason's staging area.
"Do you want to sit over here and watch or would you rather go back to the benches and watch from there?" Jason asked.
"This chair looks much more comfortable than those benches so I think I'll stay here if you don't mind."
"Why would I mind? I want you to be comfortable and enjoy yourself."
"I didn't know if I was allowed to sit here."
"You're with me so you're allowed to sit over here if you'd like." Jason said as he began to pull out the shotgun case and unlock it.
"Okay. I just didn't want you to get in trouble for having me over here."
"Fair enough. I appreciate your concern for me not getting trouble.I'll be back shortly and then we can get this stuff loaded up while we wait for everyone to finish so that we're ready to go after they announce the winners." Jason said as he started to make his way out from behind the table with the shotgun.
As Jason approached the shotgun course, he got himself together and felt a renewed feeling after talking to Derrin during lunch. "She really is great. I really need to ask her out at dinner tonight. She makes me so happy all the time." Jason thought to himself.
Once at the starting line, Jason made sure the shotgun was ready to go and made sure he had his ammunition pouch of shotgun shells with him. Once the timer went off, Jason blazed his way through the shotgun course and finished feeling confident. There was no scoring booth to visit at this point. Jason just had to wait until everyone else had finished to find out his score.
Once Jason was back at his staging table, he began to put everything away when he was approached by another competitor who began asking him about the rifle he had used earlier in the match. After a brief conversation with the man, Jason turned to Derrin and said "Want to take a walk with me?"
They made their way to the car and put all of Jason's cases back in the trunk and went to get another bottle of water before heading back to get the final scores.
"I'm really glad you came today." Jason said as they sat at the staging area.
"Why is that?" Derrin asked Jason looking puzzled.
"You're just great company. I really enjoy spending time with you. You always know how to make me smile." he replied.
"Oh really? I'm gonna laugh if you lose because you were too busy thinking about me instead of the match." Derrin said with a smile.
"If anything, thinking of you is going to make me shoot better. I have to show you that I'm a better shooter than you." Jason said as he smiled and stuck his tongue out at Derrin.
A short time later, Jason and Derrin heard the announcement that the organizers were ready to announce the winners. Jason and Derrin made their way to the scoring booth for the announcement.
The organizers thanked everyone for their participation and began to announce the winners. By the time they had reached second place, Jason's name hadn't been called yet and it was then that he knew he had locked in either a first or second place finish. The announcer then said "In second place, we have a very accurate shooter who was determined to excel in today's competition. He scored 145 in the kill-house. He was also the only one to earn a full 150 in the long range portion. He seems to have faltered only a little bit in the shotgun class and earned a total of 135 points. The second place winner is Jason West." Jason stepped up and shook hands with the organizers as he accepted his prize.
After the final announcement was made awarding the first place prize, Jason was surprised to learn that he had only been beaten by 5 points. Jason and Derrin made their way back to the Mustang. Again, Jason opened the door for Derrin and then got in himself. They made their way back out to the main road and began to head home.
As they made their way home they stopped to have dinner just outside San Francisco at one of Derrin's favorite restaurants.
"Did you have a good day?" Derrin asked while they were waiting for their dinner to arrive.
"There is only one thing that could make this day any better." Jason replied.
"And whats that?"
"You answering a certain question I've been wanting to ask you."
"What question would that be?"
"Would you do me the honor of being my girlfriend?" Jason asked sheepishly. He was hoping she would say yes but wasn't sure how she would react.
"Because I like to watch you squirm a little, I guess you'll have to wait just a little longer for your answer since our food is here."
Jason began to feel a little dejected as he was almost certain that her answer would be no at this point. They made small talk while eating and for the rest of the way home.
Once they arrived home, Jason unpacked the car and followed Derrin up the stairs admiring her behind the whole way up.
"Go put that stuff in your apartment and then just let yourself into my apartment. I have a surprise for you Jay." Derrin said as she unlocked her apartment.
"Okay." Jason said as he began to feel a renewed sense of happiness about this sudden surprise that Derrin had mentioned.
Jason quickly unlocked his door and stepped inside to put his weapons back in the safe. Once everything had been unpacked and safely locked away in the safe again, Jason made his way over to Derrin's apartment. He was thoroughly surprised when he walked in. Derrin had changed into some lacy lingerie and was waiting on the couch for him while he had been putting his stuff away. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
"To answer your question from earlier, yes I would. I have been waiting for you to ask me. Would you like to join me on the couch and watch a movie while we relax?" Derrin said as Jason looked her over in amazement. She could tell that this had just made his entire day.
"Of course I would. Do you mind if I take my shirt off though while we watch a movie? I'd feel much more comfortable."
"Please do take that shirt off." Derrin replied as she got up to put a movie on.
The End.
After taking a shower and putting on a comfortable pair of ripstop BDU pants and a t-shirt, Jason walked over to his gun safe to begin loading up everything he would need.
