So far, it had been a fairly uneventful ride from the Bay to Fresno. As promised, Jason was on his best behavior -- he complimented her outfit, held doors open for her, and even let her choose the music they listened to as they drove down the Golden State Highway. It was a pleasant surprise for Derrin, who was beginning to grow weary of the bizarre behavior displayed earlier in the week.
“I didn’t even know you had family out this way at all.”
“Oh yeah. Remington has been living in Cali for almost ten years now. He loves it.”
“I don’t blame him. I think moving here was one of the best decisions I’ve made myself.”
“Really?”
“Sure. I could imagine myself settling down here.”
“Hm.”
“You can’t?”
“I dunno.” she admitted. “Sometimes I get homesick.”
Jason offered her a sympathetic smile. “It gets better.”
“I hope so. Thanks for coming, by the way.” she said, giving his arm a squeeze. “Having you around is going to make this a lot more tolerable.”
As they were driving, Jason noticed what appeared to be remains from a crash. It was obvious that the police and emergency crews had been there already as there were remnants of road flares that had been burned. He also saw some vehicle debris that was still in the roadway but it was too late for him to avoid it.
There was a loud bang.
“That didn’t sound good.” Derrin commented. Jason quickly pulled over to inspect the damage to the Audi R8.
"What are the chances?" he asked, assessing the situation. "We blow not one, but two tires?"
“Seriously?”
He ran a hand through his blond locks, obviously stressed. “And I only have one spare.”
“Well, this is great. How are we going to get there now?” Derrin asked.
Suddenly, Jason had an idea. “Back in Detroit, we have a mobile tire changing service. Let me see if I can find one out here.” Jason pulled out his phone and began his search.
While Jason was searching, Derrin gave her brother a call, pacing back and forth as she did. Jason watched as she walked a short distance away, coming back with an obviously disappointed disposition.
“They’ll be here in 20 minutes. I even made sure to tell them what size tire to bring.”
The young woman leaned against the vehicle. “Hopefully they will get here quickly so that we can make it in time for the ceremony. Remy said he will try to hold off for a few minutes but he couldn’t promise anything.”
A few minutes later, the tire changing company’s truck pulled up and the man approached Jason to assess the situation. Jason took a clipboard from the man and began filling out paperwork while the tire changer went about changing both tires. Jason hoped the man worked quick enough so that Derrin didn’t miss her brother’s wedding. He knew how much this meant to her and didn’t want to let her down.
Just as Jason finished the paperwork, the man approached Jason to ask him for payment. Jason reached into his wallet and pulled a credit card out and handed it to the tire changer to run for the bill. Once the receipt was printed, Jason scribbled his signature on the small piece of paper and handed the man a twenty dollar bill as a tip for his speedy service.
Jason and Derrin both put their seatbelts on and got themselves ready to go. The techie pushed the speed limit as much as he felt he safely could without getting a ticket in an effort to make it there on time. He didn’t want her to miss this because of some debris in the roadway.
Derrin was keeping an eye on the clock as Jason quickly made up for the lost time and as they neared the church, she felt a sense of relief.
Jason eased the Audi into a parking space and then quickly made his way around to open the door for Derrin. He wanted to make sure that the tire issue was the only down part of the day for her.
“Thanks,” she half whispered, as they entered the church as inconspicuously as possible. “For everything.”
He squeezed her hand in response.

As the day went on, they moved into a large reception hall with decorated tables. Derrin and Jason walked around until they found the seats containing their names.
“Would you like a drink?” Jason asked before heading to the bar.
“I’m not really sure what to get.” she replied.
“I’m sure I can think of something for you that you might enjoy.” Jason said as he walked towards the bar.
A few minutes later, he returned with a handful of drinks.
“What? I couldn’t decide so you bought them all?” Derrin asked.
“Well I got a drink called an Arizona Sunset for you and I wanted to try one as well but I also got a Dr. Pepper for myself in case I didn’t like the other drink.” he replied as he set the drinks down on the table.
Derrin blinked, then chuckled, becoming accustomed to Jason’s quirks.
A drooling tuxedo clad toddler wobbled his way to his aunt’s leg, arms outstretched. Smiling, Derrin picked up Macen, the trio bringing him over to his parents to congratulate the newly wed couple.
After a few more drinks and a lot more dancing, Remington managed to pinch his sister aside.
“How does it feel to finally stop living in sin?” she teased.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
He answered with an impish grin. “You and your boyfriend there seem awfully close.”
She scowled. “He’s just a friend.”
“For now.” Then, in a more serious tone. “You two seem like you make a good pair. I like him well enough. So if you do too...go for it.”
Her brother’s advice tugged at her thoughts for the rest of the evening. Finally, when it was time to go, Derrin lingered in the parking lot.
“Something wrong?” Jason asked, confused.
“No…” she started.
“Are you sure?” he asked. “You seem to have been a little preoccupied since Remy pulled you aside earlier.”
“Just something he said.” she answered, truthfully but vaguely. “Don’t worry about it.”
Jason opened the passenger door and waited for her to get in. She did, reaching for his hand as he went to turn the key to start the engine.
“Y’know, its pretty late.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, and it’s a long drive back…”
“I’m sure I can make it in no time.” He went to turn the key again, but Derrin brought his hand down once more, resting it on her thigh.
“Maybe we should just get a hotel room for the night instead?”
Jason barely suppressed a smile. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
Once they found a room and had a key, the duo made their way to the nice suite that Jason had managed to secure.
“Think this will work for us for the night?” Jason asked.
“I’m sure it will.” Derrin replied.
“I’ve asked for an extra blanket so that we’ll both have one. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
The girl frowned. “Why would you do something like that?”
“I wasn’t sure you’d want to sleep in the same bed with me. I didn’t know we were on that level.”
“We aren’t...but I wouldn’t mind being there if you didn’t mind.”
“Why would I mind? That’s what I’ve wanted but you never seemed that into a relationship so I never asked.”
“I’m asking now, I guess. I like you, I like having you around....and I’d like things to stay that way.”
“I’d like that too.”
Her lips curved upward as she patted a spot on the bed. “Good. Come join me then?”
“Of course.”
The couple sat up for a few more hours before they laid down to cuddle and fall asleep.
