Chapter One: The Return to V.I.L.E.
The storm outside rattled the steel walls of the laboratory, but inside the real chaos was already underway. Laverna, twenty‑seven and dressed in crimson heels, sprinted across the narrow suspension bridge. The metal groaned beneath her weight, swaying above vats of chemicals that glowed an unnatural green.
Two of Dr. Claw’s henchmen appeared at the far end of the bridge, their twisted grins lit by the eerie light below. They moved with deliberate menace, each step shaking the bridge harder.
Laverna’s eyes flicked down to the bubbling liquid. The color reminded her of the Radium Girls she had once read about — young women poisoned by the luminous paint they worked with decades ago. Maybe that’s why everyone here wears masks, she thought grimly, clutching the railing as the bridge lurched.
The henchmen laughed as she lost her footing. With a cry, she tumbled headfirst into the glowing vat. The sound of her fall echoed through the chamber, swallowed by the hiss of chemicals.
Satisfied, the henchmen turned away, their laughter fading into the shadows. They never noticed the figure waiting just beyond the machinery — her partner in crime, hands steady on the controls of a stolen hook device. The machine whirred to life, its claw swinging out over the vat, ready to snatch her back from the brink.
Once she was recovered, her loving boyfriend Devlin Crooks carried her gently in his arms. Without a word, the two vanished into the storm, swallowed by the night — leaving only the echo of their escape behind
