I was having brunch with an American friend when two American tourists came in asking for directions. We spoke to them kindly, they thanked us, and as we parted ways, my friend whispered under her breath "They're so loud, these Americans."

I wondered then if she was being apologetic to me or if she disliked her own nation, perhaps both. But they weren't loud or rude at all, to me.

Yeah, that experience, I hear often enough. Where an American, embarrassed of their own brethren, apologizes on the behalf of other Americans.

Older or alternative terms used locally include simply "the fog" or sometimes "Big Mama", Seasonal Names: It is often associated with the terms "June Gloom" or "Fogust" due to its prevalence in the summer months.

Did you know....the horns on the viking's helmets are a myth? The popular image of the "horned Viking" can be traced back to the 1870s. Costume designer Carl Emil Doepler created horned helmets for Richard Wagner’s opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen to enhance the characters' theatrical presence. (I BELIEVE in the Where in Time game, they tell us this too....)
