Yeah, I remember my then-girlfriend commenting that when she was in elementary or middle school, she went on a school trip and rode on a boat that briefly crossed into Canadian waters, and that that would never happen today.

I saw on Twitter the other day that a lot of Arab Americans get "SSSS" printed on their airplane boarding passes, which doesn't appear to mean anything but automatically gets them selected for "random" background checks.

The SSSS rule, I know because a friend from the UAE once told me it happened to him.

In all honesty, the thing that got me to consider it was the election of a trans man to the school board in Erie, PA, which is just an hour from where I lived at the time, and which is a center-right city. He ran on a platform of making schools and the city at large safer for LGBT+ kids. And that's something I could see myself doing, because I cannot really see myself running for statewide office.
