(This is the phrasing of a trivia question I wrote and posted on the ACME Detective Fans fanpage on Facebook yesterday, and I was told people might like it, if I posted it here. Not everyone on the page is good at history or geography, so put a lot of info in the questions, so most of the time the answers are easy. This is the first time I re-wrote this question in many years, and I'm happy to say, it has Reached (been viewed by a lot of people.)
When it was first held at Churchill Downs on May 17, 1875, in front of 10,000 people this stakes race for 3 year-old Thoroughbreds was one/and one/half miles long (2.4 klm) the same as the Epsom Derby. The distance was changed to one and one/and one/quarter miles miles (2.0 klm) in 1886. This race has been held every year since, making it the oldest sporting event in the United States. In 1931, the date of the race was changed to the First Saturday in May. This race is often called the "the most exciting 2 minutes in sports" and it lived up to that description in 2019,when the jockey for Country House complained that Maximum Security finished first, after the he veered into the lane of another horse, which affected the outcome of the race. After reviewing the race, officials agreed, and Maximum Security was disqualified--and Country House was declared the winner. There won't be any fans in the stands this year--but one of our VILE friends might still show up to watch the race--so head there and check it out, Detectives!!
