Originally called Decoration Day, this important American observance honored soldiers who died in the
Civil War. But, eventually, it honored soldiers who died in all wars. It is believed that the first event was held
on May 5, 1866. But this day did not officially become a holiday until the Uniform Holiday Act passed in 1971
making the last Monday in May a 3 day weekend for all federal employees.
