During mid-century, France was going through a lot. It needed to hand over decision-making to someone trustworthy to the republic.

And yet the referendum was something left to the public to decide?

Not that it wasn't a mistake.

I'm sure we could all agree the question was rather convoluted: "Do you approve the bill submitted to the French people by the President of the Republic and concerning the self-determination of the populations of Algeria and the organization of the public authorities in Algeria prior to self-determination?"

I can see how that's confusing.

 

[Carmen]

Not to mention the "Je vous ai compris" phrase he uttered.

Isn't that self-explanatory, he understands the people, he knows what the public wants?

 

[Carmen]

C'est une assurance, c'est clair. Mais 60 ans plus tard, personne ne peut dire ce qu'il voulait dire.

I think this is more about what was said being at the right time.
