I believe in dialog. But it's also the government's responsibility to secure its borders. Sometimes, that includes ideas that not all citizens are ready to debate.

Case in point, Brexit.

A few have been comparing Brexit to the 1961 French referendum, thoughts?

That Algerian self-determination thing? I think that was a ballsy move by De Gaulle.

 

[Chase]

Resulted in some violence and a putsch, but it made sense. Brexit was really a bid for power that never worked out. Repeatedly didn't work out.

Now it's just dragging on.

You wouldn't consider De Gaulle's rise in 1958 somewhat of a 'coup'?

 

[Chase]

He was invited back. They gave him special rights under the circumstances.

 

[Chase]

He had great credibility.

 

[Carmen]

But, in a way, it was a bid for power.

 

[Carmen]

Perhaps the difference here is that in 1961, that bid for power won out.

 

[Chase]

It's fundamentally different.
