Sophie Hélène Conrad was born in Geneva, Switzerland, where she spent her childhood in the most comfortable of circumstances and gained a spirited, self-possessed disposition that found very little in life to disagree with.
In the years of her adolescence, she became increasingly involved in the scientific community and displayed an aptitude for the physical sciences. Surviving an aviation accident altered the course of her ambitions and set her on the path of medicine. With the support of an eminent American scientist, she moved to the United States and graduated magna cum laude from the Harvard Medical School.
