    To clarify, the only thing average user is going to have access to is the rfid card itself. They will never see any mqtt messages, statistics, ACL's, or any of that. The whole process is going to be completely transparent to them.

    I'm looking into it now. There is a secure variant of mqtt that can use ssl/tls.

    The other trick here is going to be security. MQTT is unsecure by default, as is node-red.

    It's not very common, but there's arduino/esp32 libraries for each discrete element, so it shouldn't take too much glue to bring it all together.
